What Does TPMS Mean?

TPMS Light on Dash

What is TPMS in reference to? TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System, which is a system that uses sensors to track the air pressure of your tire. If it senses that more than one of your tires has lower tire pressure, the TPMS warning light will turn on and flash so that you know to add air to your vehicle. Most new vehicles have TPMS, so make sure to use this system to prevent tire pressure and maintain good vehicle handling with us at Beechmont Toyota near Loveland or Mason. Be sure to visit our service center if you have any questions or concerns.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

The purpose of the tire pressure monitoring system is used to track the tire pressure inside of your tires to alert you if the levels are too low. The TPMS dashboard warning light looks like a flat tire with an exclamation mark in the middle or it might also be the illuminated letters TPMS. If you notice that your pressure light is on, this could mean that your tires are underinflated or:

  • Poor traction
  • Decreased load carrying capability
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy

In the short run, you will prevent a potential accident, but in the long run, this can prevent your tires from wearing out prematurely and optimize fuel economy.

Proper Tire Inflation

Both over and under inflation of tire can lead to a wide array of unwanted issues for drivers. Meanwhile, a properly inflated tire will:

  • Reduce tread movement thereby increasing the life of the tire
  • Reduce rolling resistance which will increase vehicle efficiency
  • Increase water dispersion which decreases the likelihood of hydroplaning

You have several options when it comes to filling up your tires:

  • Many gas stations have tire filling areas separate from the pump station.
  • You can take your vehicle to your favorite service center for full tire service.
  • If you need a little more air in your tires quickly, you can even use a bike pump!
