Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

Check Engine Light

This has happened to all of us before. You were driving along in Hyde Park when your check engine light suddenly illuminates. Most of the time, you may determine there is nothing wrong with your engine, but that pesky light just doesn’t want to shut off. The Beechmont Toyota service center is here to help reset the check engine light and make sure your vehicle is performing at its best.

Get Your Vehicle Inspected

Most drivers don’t enjoy getting their vehicles fixed, but it’s an important task that has to get done. Not to mention, ignoring the problem now just snowballs into a much larger issue over time – that can get extremely costly. You can schedule a service appointment online to have a factory-trained and certified technician inspect and diagnose your vehicle. We’ll get you back out on the West Chester roads promptly. We offer an excellent selection of service specials to help you save on your appointment.

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

Can’t find any problems? You can manually reset your check engine light in a few simple steps:

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Put on a pair of safety gloves and glasses.
  3. Locate the negative battery terminal. It has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. For reference, the positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
  4. Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.

If this doesn’t work, there is another option, but disconnecting your battery could reset your Entune™ infotainment system.

Check Your Gas Cap

There could also be a loose gas cap, which will cause fumes to release. In return, your check engine light illuminates. Once you have parked your car, remove your gas cap and put it right back on. If the engine light doesn’t turn off right away, follow the steps above to disconnect the battery, and you should be all set!
