How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

close up of tire tread

Tires will eventually need to be replaced as they wear down over time. While you can’t prevent the unavoidable, you can help your tires last longer. How often you drive through Loveland and other driving factors can have an impact on the age of your tires. Learn how to make your tires last longer with the service center at Beechmont Toyota.

Long-Life Tire Tips

To help you get the most out of your West Chester drives and get long-life tires, follow these tips:

  • Tire Pressure: Keep up with your tire pressure by checking the pressure of your tires monthly. This can be done by using your vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
  • Tire Rotation: Tire wear unevenly, so rotating your tires regularly helps the tires wear more evenly over time and improves the lifespan of your tires.
  • Tire Balance: Having your tires balanced regularly to make sure that the weight is properly distributed to all of the wheels, which will ensure even tread tear.
  • Vehicle Alignment: If you notice your steering wheel shaking, then you may need to get your wheels aligned. Driving on rougher roads or running over potholes and other road obstacles can cause this to happen over time.

Causes of Tire Tread Wear

As you drive through Mason, your tire tread will begin to wear down. Sometimes, the way your tire tread wears down can tell you if there are certain problems with your vehicle. Here are some of the different tread wear patterns you may notice on your tires:

  • Toe Wear: Known as “toe wear” or “camber wear”, this type of tread occurs on the inner and outer part of the tire and usually means the tires are misaligned.
  • Center Tread Wear: Tire tread wear on the center of your tire could mean that the tire is overinflated.
  • Edge Tread Wear: Tire tread wear on the edge of your tire could point to underinflation.
  • Cupping Tread Wear: Cupping wear occurs when there is a diagonal scallop in the tire. This usually means there is something wrong with the suspension system.
  • Patchy Tread Wear: If your tread is wearing down in patches, then the tires are probably out of balance.

If you notice any of these signs on your tires, schedule a visit with our service center at Beechmont Toyota today.

Lifespan of a Spare Tire

Sometimes, one of your tires gives out, and you’re forced to use the spare. But how long can you drive on a spare tire? You can tell how long you’ll have on a spare tire by its size:

  • Full-Size: You can drive on this tire safely, but you’ll just want to have it changed quickly since this spare tire is more than likely not the same brand as the other tires on your vehicle.
  • Space Saver: Usually known as “donut tires”, these tires shouldn’t be driven on more than 70 miles, and you shouldn’t exceed 50 mph.
  • Run-Flat: With these tires, you can usually drive about 50 miles after the tire has been punctured or gone flat.
